How to engage your subconscious mind in goal setting
Deciding and taking action on your goal means taping into a source that has more power than the SMART acronym for goal setting can provide. The reason why I am writing this blog entry is because I created a video about SMART goal setting for you; Select this link.
But… after thinking about it carefully I want to put it into context for you.
The SMART acronym for goal setting is easy to apply. It can be used for setting objectives and major tasks or projects with people as well. I have found it most useful for building objectives with others. Communicating and understanding all aspects of a goal your working towards can never do you any harm up front..but this isn’t the point…
I like to call her Ivy. Who is Ivy? Ivy is what I call my subconscious mind and if Ivy doesn’t join the party or agree with my plans, I will naturally loose interest and not pursue my goals. Now if you have read any of my other blog entries you would know I am on a mission for world domination so I need to make my goal setting as robust as possible!!
Picture this, I have determined to strive towards a certain goal, I have taken the time to really think about it, I’m feeling no pressure by any other factors and clearly have come to the goal I want to achieve. I taken the time to reflect, understand my important ‘why’.
I type in ‘goal setting’ into Google and locate lots of articles on SMART acronym for goal setting. I’m excited and complete the task of defining my goal.
What’s the catch? How does this relate to my subconscious mind and goal setting? Does completing the SMART acronym for goal setting mean I am on the right track? Now this is where you need to take care…
To continue with this scenario I need to invite to the stage one new character. My conscious mind, her name is Daisy, Daisy is a breath of fresh air, the ‘girl-next- door type’. Daisy always tries to do the right thing.
What I need to be mindful of is Ivy is the influential one out of the two. Ivy aka my subconscious mind is the decision maker. Ivy is very mysterious and is not as vocal as Daisy but influences all actions and thought processes. Ivy is like when of those characters from a movie, you never know what side she is one.
Daisy has been with me through the whole goal setting process. The point here is, if I don’t engage Ivy, if I don’t retain my subconscious mind’s attention and keep it over time, Ivy won’t support any actions I have to do to get to my goal which will not keep me motivated to complete my goals.
That’s the catch. My subconscious needs to be engaged if I am going to create any real change in my life.
Ivy will only listen if I incorporate the following factors;
• The goal is repeated daily either by being read or listened to orally.
• A mental image combined with emotions, sound and exact locations need to be played like a story for Ivy daily. (These two points are both summarized. For more information this short video captures an interview with the author. I have read the book, its pretty amazing. The authors of the book is Stuart Lichtman and Joe Vitale.
• Using your body to help retain important information, example Tony Robbins video
Once Ivy is engaged, I will be capable of moving mountains to get to my goal. Massive action will happen naturally because I taped into the power of the subconscious mind. Your subconscious is very powerful once it’s engaged. Successful people focus on their goals regularly, (This is more than once a day) to keep their subconscious connected and responsive.
I wanted to bring this to your attention because I think it’s important to understand how our minds work so we can use this to our advantage.
In summary, I don’t recommend using the SMART acronym for goal setting in isolation. I recommend you take steps to engage your subconscious.
Personally, I think it’s interesting to learn about how the mind works. Don’t worry I will stop calling my subconscious Ivy and Daisy.
)
Let me know of any personal experiences you have had with the SMART acronym or with goal setting in general and what has been effective for you.
Be bold, take action.
